What is the difference between Speciality and Commercial Coffee?

If you’re new on your journey to becoming a coffee guru, some of the phrases such as specialty and commercial coffee may appear to be slightly daunting, but in reality, they are incredibly easy concepts to understand.

While there are a number of factors that help to define Speciality Coffee, the following definitions are arguably the most important when distinguishing between the two types.

What is Speciality Coffee?

In almost all instances, Speciality Coffee is stored and delivered as whole beans. While roasteries and coffee shops will sometimes provide the option to grind them on your behalf, buying specialty coffee normally means that it will have to be ground before it is brewed.

Additionally, specialty coffee will have been grown by farmers with great care often at a high altitude. The beans will have come from a single origin, from the same crop, farmer, or region of a specific country. Unless specified these beans will not have been mixed with others.

What is Commercial Coffee?

This is probably what you might consider being ‘regular coffee’. Commercial coffee refers to the products you buy in bulk from supermarkets or large brands.

There will be very little information on where the bean comes from or if it was farmed ethically. The likelihood is that when you drink commercial coffee, it is simply a combination of beans chucked together with very little care or thought behind how they might taste.
